MEDIATION

For spouses who cannot agree on the terms of a divorce, mediators can be used to resolve disputes on matters such as child custody, visitation, and property settlements. A mediator may be a attorney or some other professional such as a marriage counselor. You and your spouse can meet with the mediator to discuss the issues and work out an agreement acceptable to both of you. Attorneys and judges are usually not present during mediation sessions and formal legal procedures to not apply. If you and your spouse can agree on all terms, then the divorce simply involves filing of papers at the courthouse as well as one brief appearance before a judge or commissioner.
